Support for the Homeless

The William S. Abell Foundation supports organizations that provide services for the homeless as part of our core mission with grants that are awarded quarterly that typically do not exceed $25,000 per grantee.

DEADLINES:

Letters of Intent Due: December 30th, April 2nd, July 2nd, October 1st.
Proposal Due: January 13th, April 16th, July 16th, October 15th.

Before submitting a letter of intent or application, review the guidelines below and then go to: Am I Eligible?

Grant requests must be from nonprofits operating in:

The District of Columbia;
Montgomery, Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland.

The Foundation will consider applications for:

Homeless shelters;
Transitional Housing;
Services for the homeless.

The Foundation will not consider applications for:

Consecutive year grants;
Organizations that are not "public charities" as described in IRC S 509(a) (1) or (2).

Spotlight On

Pathways to Housing, D.C.

Pathways to Housing, D.C. opened its doors in 2004 as a replication of Pathways to Housing, Inc. in New York who are known as the innovators of the Housing First model. Their mission is to provide housing and services to chronically homeless individuals with serious mental illnesses living on the streets of Washington, D.C.

In December 2011, Pathways to Housing, D.C. received a grant from the William S. Abell Foundation, Inc. in the amount of $25,000 to ensure 420 chronically homeless tenants living in their Housing First scattered-site apartments maintain their housing stability.

Pathways to Housing, D.C. seeks out the most visible and vulnerable segment of DC's homeless—those people living on the streets or other public places who have psychiatric disabilities, co-occurring substance abuse disorders, or other challenges and offers the homeless in D.C. immediate access to apartments without requiring participation in a treatment or sobriety program.
