Support for the Intellectually Disabled

The William S. Abell Foundation supports qualified organizations providing services for the Intellectually Disabled as part of our core mission with grants that are awarded quarterly that typically do not exceed $25,000 per grantee.

The William S. Abell Foundation funds programs for the intellectual disabled only, and not for persons with other developmental disabilities.  "The American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities has substituted the term intellectual disability as a narrow definition of mental retardation. This disability is characterized by 1) intellectual functioning level (IQ) below 70-75;  2) significant limitations in conceptual, social and practical adaptive skills;  3) a disability originating before the age of 18". 

DEADLINES:

  • Letters of Intent Due: December 30th, April 2nd, July 2nd, October 1st.
  • Proposal Due: January 13th, April 16th, July 16th, October 15th.

Before submitting a letter of intent or grant application, please review the following guidelines and then go to:  Am I Eligible?

Grant requests must be from nonprofits operating in:

  • The District of Columbia;
  • Montgomery, Prince George’s, Charles, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties in Maryland.

The Foundation will consider applications for:

  • Life skills and job training;
  • Day care programs;
  • Employment training;
  • Transportation;
  • Relief-care and support for caregivers;
  • Other services for the Intellectually Disabled.

The Foundation will not consider applications for:

  • Programs primarily serving clients who are not Intellectually Disabled but who are otherwise disabled;
  • Consecutive year grants;
  • Organizations that are not "public charities" as described in IRC S 509(a) (1) or (2).
